Two Best Fast-Casual Charleston Biscuits Spots

When my husband and I booked a last-minute trip to Charleston a couple of months ago, I knew I was going to be eating alllll the deliciously indulgent food I could get my hands on. What I didn’t know was how deeply I’d fall in love with biscuits. Seriously, I think I had one at almost every single meal. Now, I’ve had a few biscuits in my day, but living in New England, it’s not really our thing. I’ll be 100% honest here, the only memorable biscuits I had up to this point was a good ol’ buttery KFC biscuit (I know, I know, gross – sorry). So, to say that I was blown away by the biscuits in Charleston is an understatement. This quintessential Lowcountry favorite changed my opinion on these flavorful pillows of carbs after just a few bites. Since we were only there for a few days, we didn’t try all the famous spots. But we did try two fast-casual biscuit spots in Charleston that are totally worth a taste…

Vicious Biscuit – 10/10

We stayed in Mount Pleasant during our trip and decided not to rent a car. Poor choices. So, one morning we decided to take a lil’ two-mile stroll from our hotel (The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina) to Vicious Biscuit. Now, it was a random Monday morning in March, so I figured we’d be good to go to just wander in and get a bite immediately. I was wrong. The line wound around the entire restaurant, and we waited so long that my hangry, post-two-mile walk self almost decided to go somewhere else. I am pretty glad I sucked it up because these were the best damn biscuits I’ve ever tasted.

We ordered The Ranchero and The Flamethrower, along with a sweet side of The Vicious Beignets, which no one should skip. Of the two biscuits, The Flamethrower was the winner. Perfectly fried chicken with just the right amount of hot sauce paired with a fluffy buttermilk biscuit was a recipe for a perfect bite every time.

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit – 7/10

After trying the other biscuits throughout the week, Callie’s was really good but slightly underwhelming compared to Vicious. It’s a quick counter-service spot where you can tell the eggs are whipped up in the microwave. Not a bad thing, just not as fresh and tasty as Vicious Biscuit, in my opinion. The biscuits were a little bit more dry and crumbly, which wasn’t my cup of tea. Still tasty but not our top choice. We tried the location on Upper King Street, but there are a few more in the city, and you can buy biscuits to make at home, which would be great if you were in an Airbnb for the week.

What we liked was the 3-for-$6 biscuits. They’re little baby biscuits that are about 2×2 and perfect if you want to taste a little bit of everything. We tried the cinnamon, blackberry, and cheese and chive. The winner was definitely the blackberry. It was just a buttermilk biscuit, cut in half and filled with a sweet blackberry jam that was pure perfection! Of course, we ate them super-fast and didn’t take pictures, oops.

In our expert eater opinion, Vicious Biscuit was the clear winner when it comes to fast-casual biscuit spots in Charleston. But honestly, either spot will delight your tastebuds and blow any KFC biscuit out of the water.
